ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapter of this book. The book draws on ethnography, autoethnography and small-scale empirical research to test the assumptions it and other writers make about celebrity culture. Celebrity culture may be more demotic than democratic, but the research on its manifestations is at its best when we ask people to tell us their stories. The circuit of celebrity culture and the circuit of celebrity affect are not linear devices, neither are they separate and fully separable. As the examples threaded throughout the book demonstrate, they fire off one another, extinguish one another, lay court and siege to one another. It centres the red heart of celebrity culture and does so with passion and conviction. Finally, the book draws upon both historical examples and case studies from the contemporary moment.
