ABSTRACT

Elaine is interested in creating support services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) students on her campus, but has little in the way of resources to understand how she might go about this process. She attends a National Association for Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) conference and finds they have a community of practice for LGBT issues. She joins the community of practice and attends some sessions at the conference that help her to connect with colleagues who have all sorts of resources and strategies for creating change. The group holds meetings online throughout the year, so Elaine is able to send questions and get feedback and advice on an ongoing basis. What seemed an impossible task six months ago seems well within Elaine’s reach thanks to the resources she was able to acquire through connecting with this community of practice.
