ABSTRACT

We studied this among 1974 qualifiers (Parkhouse and Ellin 1990a). Included in the questionnaire sent to them in 1985 was a section asking how many times people had moved ‘in the course of training’, over various distances and including moves abroad. We specified that moves for short locums and moves of less than fifteen miles should not be included, thus eliminating most movements between hospitals within a city. A total of 1,830 questionnaires were returned (78.7 per cent, not allowing for those deceased or untraceable). In seventy-nine cases the questions on movement were not answered; the results, shown as percentages of respondents to the 1985 questionnaire, thus potentially underestimate the amount of movement, although it is likely that in many cases no entry signified no movement.
