ABSTRACT

India currently receives less than 3 percent of its electricity from nuclear reactors, but intends to increase that figure to 25 percent by 2050. Unlike most other countries, India was not party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT); therefore, it had to rely significantly on indigenous nuclear technology development. Nuclear power has a long history in the country, with analysts calling it “a basic tenet” of Indian energy policy since the mid-1950s. 1 Currently, there are suggestions that the Indian nuclear power industry is about to experience a market boom after a deal with the United States in 2008 to supply it with American LWR technology. 2 It is also building the largest nuclear power plant in the world at Jaitapur.
