ABSTRACT

The political advertisement begins as Joe Soptic, balding, with hollow circles beneath his eyes, sadly explains that he was a steelworker for 30 years. He still displays pride as he slips on a hard hat. “We had a reputation for quality products,” he says. “It was something that was American-made.” As he talks, the screen lights up with images of a steel plant. Fire rains down from the melting of steel, and a driver carts raw materials from one part of the plant to another. “We weren’t rich, but I was able to put my daughter through college,” Soptic explains.
