ABSTRACT

A recent trailer on the BBC cut from one group of people to another using the now familiar jerky and speedy technique which is designed to capture even the most errant attention. The groups varied. Some were at work, some were at play, some were young, some were black, and so on; and taken together they probably represented a fair cross section of people and social settings. They shared one thing, however. They were all talking about what was happening in Eastenders, a BBC soap. The message was clear: if you want a social life, you had better watch Eastenders.
