ABSTRACT

China is a large developing country, and for a long period of time it has continued to experience problems with poverty. Since the founding of the PRC, the Chinese government and all of society have made constant efforts to ensure the basic livelihood of the people. Since China’s reform and opening up, the national economy has developed rapidly, and per capita income has risen; but serious issues of urban and rural poverty have also occurred, against which the Chinese government has carried out large-scale anti-poverty action. This anti-poverty action is the most important and successful aspect of the social policy action system over the past 30 years. In general, China’s anti-poverty action has achieved great success, pulling hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, and promoting national economic and social development. Furthermore, it has created the China Experience in anti-poverty action, making a great contribution to world poverty reduction strategies. This chapter summarizes China’s poverty issues, which need to be examined in order to persist in anti-poverty actions in China and around the world.
