ABSTRACT

In June 1886 army and Indian veterans met on the battlefield to mark the tenth anniversary of the battle. Representing the army were such notables as Major Benteen, Captain Godfrey, Captain McDougall, and Dr. Porter. Among those representing the Indians were the Hunkpapa warrior Gall and the Crow scout Curley. Many warriors refused to talk about the battle but Gall willingly shared his recollections. He did so through an interpreter as he and a small party walked the battlefield. Newspapers across the country published his story.
