ABSTRACT

General Terry’s official report of what transpired on the Little Bighorn, which he submitted by telegram, was written with not only his superiors in Washington in mind but also the general public. This accounts for its terse and matter-of-fact style. The telegram was delayed in transit and reached Washington after his more damning confidential report to Sheridan had fallen into the hands of the press and become public. Note that his official report emphasizes the unprecedented size of the village and the rugged terrain the Montana column had to traverse as it moved toward the agreed-upon rendezvous point.
