ABSTRACT

David raises an issue that I have wrestled with for many years, namely do I or do I not I agree with what is sometimes described as Wittgenstein's “quietistic” attitude to philosophical problems. Are they “nonsense” to be exposed, as many Wittgensteinians would claim, or do they raise substantive issues? I think I am beginning to find my way out of my perplexity. 1 But it's a way that I think will make David and some other of my former students unhappy. But I'm always doing that. And as long as I live I suppose I shall make various former students unhappy.
