ABSTRACT

Diagnosis, assessment and teaching should always be interlinked and should be on-going. Assessment can be used to identify problems with learning and diagnosis should lead to ideas for understanding and addressing those problems, but, more importantly both can be used to pre-empt many future problems with learning mathematics. As far as is possible we need to get teaching right fi rst time to capture the powerful infl uence of the fi rst learning experience.
