The digital age
Societies change over time through events, innovations and evolving ideologies. The introduction of digital technologies and related infrastructure could signify the commencement of social change at a similar scale to that experienced during and following the industrial revolution. Like the industrial age, a digital age is a time of innovations and inventions which act as catalysts for change within complex systems on the macro level (national or global) and the micro level (small complex organisations such as schools). This chapter explores how innovations and societal change can infl uence education using the industrial age as a point of reference for considering teaching and learning in the digital age.
