Agricultural expansion, forest products as safety nets and deforestation
Simultaneously, agricultural development is an important tool for poverty alleviation and long term development (World Bank 2001). Therefore, a crucial question is whether there is a trade-off between rural development and forest conservation. An important factor is the frequent use by poor households of non-timber forest products (NTFP)1 as safety nets. The consequences of this use for deforestation are an interesting issue and can be investigated with farm household models – a priority for future research (Angelsen and Kaimowitz 1999).
