ABSTRACT
Classical criminology emerged at a time when the naturalistic approach of the social contract theorists we encountered above was challenging the previously dominant spiritualist approach to explaining crime and criminal behaviour and it was Cesare Beccaria in Italy and Jeremy Bentham in Britain writing in the late eighteenth century who established the essential components of the rational actor model.
