ABSTRACT
If you choose to base your teaching around the idea of investigating texts rather than using a textbook approach, you will need to give your students the critical tools with which to investigate. We will shortly consider the linguistic methods/frameworks that are used at A level. These methods are only really useful if you fi rst approach the determiners of language transaction: audience, purpose and context. Students need to be able to locate the text as a genuine communication.
