ABSTRACT

The word grammar is one that most of your students will greet with a mixture of fear and loathing. They feel that they should know something about this area of language, particularly as they have put themselves forward for an advanced course in English language. Hiding their incompetence can then take up a lot of a student’s energies. Armed only with the difference between a simile and a metaphor and a vague remembrance of a few other literary terms, students can actively dismiss this area of their understanding. (What’s worse, you – the teacher – might be feeling this way too!).
