By bringing adesire to help, building rapport, and communicating from the Adult ego state you are weIl on your way to accomplishing the stage-specific activities that are apart of Support-for-Thought. However, there is one more very important stage-related activity, i.e., clarifying the narrative of the person you are coaching. In a helping conversation, there is always a point of departure. The point of departure is a narrative or story that describes a person's current situation or problem as she sees it. However, people's stories don't arrive in a nice, neat package. They are often a loosely knit web of incomplete information, vague issues, hidden concerns, and implicit goals. In a manner of speaking, a person's narrative, as presented, is only the tip of the iceberg.
