Challenge-for-Thought: Designing the Future
Music can be considered interplay between consonance and dissonance; likewise, a coaching conversation can be considered interplay between support and challenge. Support increases rapport and creates harmony while challenge adds a discordant-but necessary-note to the conversation. Trevino (1996) makes the point that while supportive interactions between a helper and another person enhance the relationship, a healthy amount of discord facilitates change. Egan agrees with this idea when he writes, "Because helping at its best is a constructive social-influence process, some form of challenge is central to helping" (Egan, 201 0, p. 211). In other words, sometimes you have to make people uncomfortable for their own good.
