ABSTRACT

On a railway journey to Paris and Belgium, D. G. Rossetti is held up in Paris by French bureaucracy. As he waits, he sees the rotting body of a murdered man and imagines the figure of the murderer standing in the crowd beside him, coolly observing his victim:

You fancy him Smoking an early pipe, and watching, as An artist, the effect of his last work.1
