ABSTRACT

Ecological design is seen as a critical way to improve the sustainability of our cities. In this chapter eco-design is harnessed to the process of renovation to improve the environmental performance of buildings. We have called this ecological retrofitting for a number of reasons. We now see this process as an extension of bioclimatic retrofitting, as a central strategy in the move towards both the mitigation of the pollution which is arguably responsible for climate change and adaptation to it. Retrofitting should be differentiated from renovation. Renovation attacks the effects of obsolescence in buildings while retrofitting is the addition of new technologies to old systems for the purpose of improved efficiency.
