ABSTRACT
Building services plant, be it located inside or outside buildings, generates noise which invariably must be controlled if it is not to cause disturbance to building occupiers or neighbours. This chapter sets down some background information on noise and acoustics to provide the reader with the basic understanding required in order to consider the noise generated by building services equipment and how it may be controlled. Further guidance can be found in documents such as the CIBSE Guide B and other reference books [6, 9, 10].
