ABSTRACT

More complicated for museum directors is the process of managing cultural change within a museum organisation, especially where the culture has become conservative rather than innovative. Many museum directors will be appointed to a museum where change is required in order to develop the quality of the museum and its work. The need for change may have been already recognised internally and/or externally. Indeed, the appointment may have been made by the governing body with this in mind, or the director may himself or herself recognise that cultural change is required from a professional perspective.
