ABSTRACT

None of these things can be taught or described in a book. But there are some pieces of advice that may be helpful.

There are two main areas with which administration is primarily concerned: fi nance and personnel. Units 92 and 97-105 describe some of these aspects. In many museums, the administrative procedures will be laid down by others, with little possibility for the museum director to make changes. What he or she can do, though, is to ensure that the procedures are regularly reviewed, and that a report is prepared assessing their strengths and weaknesses, and recommending improvements. Such a review is best done not by the person in charge of administration, but by someone from outside the museum staff altogether, working closely with the junior staff of the museum – they are the people who know all the problems! Such an outside review is valuable even in a very small museum.
