ABSTRACT
The United Nations was conceived during the Second World War and born in June 1945. This second experiment in universal international organization followed the failed League of Nations that had emerged after the First World War – the so-called war to end all wars. The mass death and destruction, unconscionable atrocities and human suffering caused by a further round of
great-power armed conflict prompted a further effort to institutionalize collective security. The UN embodies the latest attempt at international cooperation ‘to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war’.
