ABSTRACT

The next step in preparing you for structural analysis in relation to sonata form is to consider structural prototypes. It will be extremely helpful to you to know that there are a finite number of patterns at the deepest levels of structure and to know what they are. We know already that there are only two viable voice-leading paradigms at the level of the fundamental structure: 3^ 2^ 1^ and 5^ 4^ 3^ 2^ 1^, which divide into 3^ 2^ || 3^ 2^ 1^ and 5^ 4^ 3^ 2^ || 5^ 4^ 3^ 2^ 1^. But we can also predict a finite number of ways these prototypes may be prolonged at the next level as well. These are listed in Example 8.1.
