ABSTRACT

The ecoMachines are instruments to transform architectural prototypes into new urban typologies capable of enhancing the interaction and mutual affection between the urban dweller and the natural and artificial urban ecologies. The installation for the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale examined the natural processes of the lagoon and suggested a number of ways in which ecoMachines could "plug in" to such an ecosystem. The installation for the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale examined the natural processes of the lagoon and suggested a number of ways in which ecoMachines could "plug in" to such an ecosystem. Algal architectures emerged, revealing unexpected potential in the choreographing of biological systems as part of hybrid architectural prototypes. As the architect turned mediator of bio-machinic processes, architecture appeared transformed into a living system, embedded with potential for evolution and interaction, both within the environment and with an excited public.
