In 2001 the local Episcopal diocese donated a parcel of land in an urban residen-
tial neighborhood in Southwest Seattle to Habitat for Humanity Seattle/South
King County (HFHSKC). The small parcel (less than an acre) was bounded by a
busy arterial street to the south (S.W. Roxbury Street) and residential streets to the
east and west. HFHSKC soon realized that developing the site would be challeng-
ing: the surrounding neighbors had concerns about the number of units that might
be built there, and the affi liate had to accommodate the request of the diocese to
reserve a housing unit for transitional housing.
