In 2001 Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia (HFHP) acquired several vacant prop-

erties in the Parkside neighborhood of West Philadelphia. Originally constructed

early in the twentieth century, Parkside is characterized by larger than average

(for Philadelphia) three-and four-story row homes with continuous front porches

across the ground fl oor of each home. Though the neighborhood had declined in

the latter decades of the twentieth century, it had retained a base of long-time resi-

dents. In the early 2000s Parkside was enjoying a modest renewal as young profes-

sionals migrated back from the suburbs to the still-affordable neighborhood.
