In the spring of 2001, professor David Hinson of Auburn University’s School of
Architecture was approached by Design Alabama (a non-profi t working to promote
design in the state) with the prospect of helping Habitat develop new home design
standards. Design Alabama staff introduced Hinson to Karen McCauley, executive
director of the Alabama Association of Habitat Affi liates (AAHA), the coordinating
state support organization for Alabama’s thirty-fi ve Habitat affi liates. According to
Hinson, he and McCauley “hit it off from the start” and began crafting a structure
for a partnership between Auburn and AAHA.
