ABSTRACT

Lesbian couples display remarkable determination, strength, and resilience in forming and sustaining relationships amid countless societal stressors. However, the eects of heterosexism, sexism, homoprejudice, and internalized homophobia on each partner and the couple strain relationships and can cause even the strongest of couples to falter or ounder. is chapter provides a contextual overview of lesbian couples’ stressors and strengths, summarizes the identity development of couples, underscores their capacity for closeness, and highlights how female couples show innovation in creating successful and satisfying relationships. In addition, it includes clinical implications to help dierentiate actual mental and relational health issues from some unique lesbian couple dynamics and culturally imposed assumptions of pathology. e use of a feminist approach underscores the value of women and their relationships; and the assessment, treatment, and engagement in the therapeutic process from a feminist and cultural perspective help to support the individual and relational health needs of clients. is approach helps clinicians resist the imposition of a heterosexual norm and provides a theoretical means to validate, strengthen, and enhance resilience for couples. Common issues and important qualities of the therapist are included, along with recommendations and conclusions to best ensure competent and armative lesbian couple therapy.
