ABSTRACT

Whereas same-sex couples in committed relationships have been breaking up for as long as there have been same-sex relationships, only recently have same-sex couples had the opportunity to legally marry, and thus legal divorce is now a consideration. is chapter will start with a summary of the recent legal landscape in the United States and Canada. Following this review will be a discussion of what is known about relationship dissolution in same-sex couples. Briey discussed will be risk and resiliency considerations, though very little has been written in these areas related to divorcing same-sex couples. Finally, therapeutic considerations will be discussed, focusing on how the literature on divorce therapy applies to same-sex couples.
