ABSTRACT

As we acknowledged in the Preface, we came to this project through different life and research experiences. However, throughout our writing and rewriting process, we maintained our commitment to providing a good and helpful resource on qualitative inquiry for higher education and student affairs researchers and practitioners. As we prepared for writing this second edition, we reflected upon what we have learned about qualitative inquiry in the years between the first and second editions from our own research, from using the first edition with graduate students and practitioners interested in learning about qualitative research, and from reading the work of others published in scholarly outlets. As we conclude this second edition of the book, we use this final chapter to identify several new lessons learned, which come out of our evolving understanding of qualitative inquiry and ability to engage with research in more sophisticated ways. We also discuss what we see as future directions in qualitative research and speculate on the impact of these directions on research practice in higher education and student affairs.
