ABSTRACT

In this chapter alternative criminal justice reforms and programs are reviewed. The purpose of this chapter is not to provide an exhaustive review of reforms and programs, but instead to introduce readers to such efforts. The reforms and programs described in this chapter were selected on the basis of documented sources. These efforts are consistent with the mission and values of the social work profession. As such, they strive to ensure justice, protect public safety, and improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system. The efficacy of some reforms and programs is presently unknown, and many more are presently being evaluated. It is essential that social workers be knowledgeable about alternative reform and program efforts. Indeed, they have the potential to transform the criminal justice system.
