ABSTRACT

The Tōhoku Earthquake and tsunami were devastating overall, but disproportionately a ected the elderly, raising awareness about emergency disaster public health issues in an ageing society. This chapter assesses the consequences of 3/11, and draws comparisons with the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, in terms of Japan’s ageing society and health issues. I also consider long-term challenges in terms of mental health and psycho-social support.
