ABSTRACT
The scenes are laid in Hanky Park, a park of Salford, England.
Act I The kitchen living-room of the Hardcastles at No. 17 North Street, Hanky Park, a district in a Lancashire manufacturing town. There is a window on the right through which the street can be seen. Above it is the front door, and behind the door is an old dresser. On the left is a kitchen range, and below, in a recess, is the sink. Beside this a door leads to the other part of the house. There is very little furniture, and what there is shows signs of decay and collapse. A plain table has some rickety chairs beside it. Near the fireplace is a rocking-chair, and below the window is a dilapidated sofa. It is important to remember that this is not
slum property, but the house of a respectable working man, whose incorrigible snobbery would be aroused if you suggested that North Street was a slum.
