Act I The overture should epitomize the play. It should be modern, powerful, dissonant. It has two dominant themes which are used all through the play, suggesting musically the two sides of the atom. Think, in imagining how one of these motifs should sound, of: ‘A blur of energy whirling in a distant orbit around the nuclear sun.’ For this same motif, think of ‘the energy acquired by one electron falling through an electric field of one million volts.’
