There are two different types of quotation: direct and indirect. A direct quote is an utterance that the speaker deems a verbatim reproduction of the original utterance. An indirect quote is a restatement of the original by the speaker. In English, a direct quote typically appears accompanied by quotation marks and an indirect quote by the word “that.”
