ABSTRACT

The learning environment is the key component of the Montessori approach because it facilitates children’s learning. This chapter examines some of the elements of Montessori practice introduced in Chapter 2 by providing an overview of the range of Montessori learning environments. It highlights the changes in the learning environment which reflect the age groups of children. It explains how the environment and the learning materials facilitate the child’s learning. Examples of age-appropriate materials are included. The role of the teacher in context of preparation and maintenance of the environment is discussed.
