ABSTRACT

Pina Bausch is usually too busy, too preoccupied to talk about her work. Like many innovative artists, she prefers to let the choreography speak for itself. If it doesn’t do that, she explains, then it’s really not effective. Several journalists were initially impelled to make the point at an Edinburgh Festival press conference several years ago that they found the company lacking in beauty. They wanted to know if the choice was deliberate on Ms. Bausch’s part.
