ABSTRACT

Beer has an ancient history dating back to 6000 bc in Babylonia and Sumer. It was one of the first products to be mechanised during the industrial revolution. Beer brewing makes use of natural products such as water, hops, barley, rice, and malt. Its contribution to environmental pollution and other ecological problems is usually not considered to be of particular importance. However, beer brewing on an industrial scale requires a substantial amount of energy and large amounts of water and natural products. In recent years the notion of ‘green’ beer has been developed by some brewers.
