ABSTRACT

This chapter will introduce you to a range of ideas and activities which have one key feature in common – they all require you to step outside of the mathematics classroom. There are a number of potential benefits to teaching and learning mathematics ‘outside’: it can give pupils a chance to engage with concepts in an active, physical way; it can give rise to memorable and unusual experiences; and it can help demonstrate to your pupils that mathematics is something that is all around them, everyday and everywhere.
