ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to excite teachers and pupils with different and innovative pictorial ways of representing and communicating geographical spatial information, ideas and concepts. The way that we view the world from different perspectives creates strong links with both ICT and art. These links are explored here with particular reference to Aboriginal painting, Google Earth and the work of two artists, Friedereich Hundertwasser and David Hockney. The focus is on what some might call ‘out-of-the-box’ approaches, since more familiar ideas about using pictorial visual communication resources are published elsewhere, notably in the Geographical Association’s Primary Geography Handbook (Scoffham 2010) and Learning and Teaching with Maps (Wiegand 2006). The aim is to give some practical, geography-led but interdisciplinary examples of how to be creative with spatial representation and communication. It is hoped that, as a result, children will develop enthusiasm for and enjoyment in looking at, reading and making different types and styles of spatial representation and a love of maps.
