ABSTRACT

Rocks and soils are fundamental to life on Earth. They form the landscapes in which we live and provide nourishment for the plants on which we depend for food. Learning about rocks and soils can facilitate links between geography and other curriculum areas. An unusual way to introduce and develop this topic is to use food as an analogy. Children of all ages can relate to food, and using it in a creative way can enable them to build up their understanding of key geographical concepts. It was the Chinese philosopher Confucius who once said, ‘I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand.’ Bearing this in mind, the ideas presented here illustrate physical features and processes in a practical manner. They also provide a basis on which to develop and enhance the children’s own creativity. Most can be delivered at various levels depending on the age and ability of your class.
