ABSTRACT

Picture storybooks have many unrecognised and underestimated qualities. Regularly used in literacy lessons, they also offer an opportunity to support creative geography teaching, since many feature a range of geographical ideas and locations. By connecting geographical ideas to children’s personal experience, picture-books can accommodate different learning styles and help to promote creative and critical thinking. They also provide children with a range of windows through which they can view the world. Conversely, a range of different geographical perspectives can be filtered into the world of the child through the virtual lens of picture-books. The creative potential of geography teaching through picture-books is substantial. The degree to which this potential can be achieved lies in the skill and the perceptions of creativity held by the primary school teacher.
