ABSTRACT

In secondary schools, the art rooms frequently seem to be in annexes or off-shoot wings, on top floors or in separate craft/practical work suites, or in some other way, physically apart from the main building where most of the business of the school takes place. As well as being separate, they tend to be different from other classrooms. This is not just because they are equipped for practical work for so, for example, are science labs, wood, metal, design and craft rooms, home economics, business studies and computer rooms. Nor is it just that students’ work is usually displayed on the walls, although this is part of it, for work is put up in other subjects. The difference is in the atmosphere, in the general climate, environment and culture which exists within and which characterizes the room.
