ABSTRACT

In the last chapter I focused on the point at which growth takes place, when the child realizes that a skill is needed and when invention has prepared the ground for the mastery of it. In this chapter I want to consider growth as a continuing process through a succession of such points. To do this, it is best to follow one particular line of development in one child’s work as a kind of case study. This case study will also draw on the themes developed in the earlier chapters. The line of development it will follow concerns David’s successive attempts, over a period of one term, to imbue his writing with a dramatic quality.
