ABSTRACT

Peter’s school opened in 1974 and is likely to remain fairly small with some 160 children, three classes of infants on the ground floor and four of juniors upstairs. Serving an area of small mid-1930s owner-occupier semi-detached houses and new council town houses, the school, which is tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac, initially took in a disproportionate number of children with behavioural problems. Some were from the nearby children’s home, and others had either been advised or required to leave the schools they had previously been attending. Perhaps any new school, like a New Year’s resolution, offers promise to those who have previously failed, or been unhappy, or been declared redundant.
