ABSTRACT
In selecting the empirical evidence for each of these propositions I have tried to choose from an extensive literature those studies which seem representative of a particular line of research enquiry. I have certainly not attempted to give a comprehensive survey of the field. In particular there are whole areas of research into attitudes that I have not been able to assimilate within the context of this work.
