ABSTRACT
Education has to be recognized as a critical element in promoting sustainability and a driving force for the change needed for lower footprint living. Learning to live in a more sustainable way is for everyone at every stage of life. Though at least as much learning takes place outside the school system, it is common to focus on education in school as the locus of learning. This leads to the important necessity for schools to be considered places for learning within an ethos of sustainability, particularly during childhood.
