ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) study focused on how games taught in physical education can draw on game-based learning in video games where conditions are created in the game for the constraints on the player to change depending on the outcome of a previous game encounter. Hopper (2011) and Hopper, Sanford, and Clarke (2009) have called this game modification by adaptation. As stated by Hopper (2011)

In modification by adaptation the game is modified to increase the challenge to the player who was successful on the previous game encounter. Changes can be made in relation to the constraints of the game, such as space, scoring, rules conditioning play or number of players, in order to ensure the outcome of the game is close, and for the unanticipated to happen during game play (p. 6).
